Ginninderra Catchment Group

Landcare and Waterwatch at Work in the Australian Capital Territory

Ginninderra Catchment Group (GCG), one of three such groups in the ACT, is the umbrella organisation for Landcare, Waterwatch and Frogwatch activities in Belconnen, Gungahlin and Hall in the north of the ACT.  GCG works to a Strategy developed in 2000 and has a Three-Year Plan of activities and projects funded by the Australian and ACT Governments and local clubs businesses and service clubs.

GCG has well established Waterwatch and Frogwatch programs and has started to build up a new set of data related to storm events.  A new, continuous Catchment Eco-Survey will provide baseline and continuing data to indicate threats to, and gaps in biodiversity and to monitor the effects of Group projects

Perhaps the greatest risk to the Woodlands and biodiversity in the Ginninderra Catchment is the huge increase in the urban/woodland interface which will come about with the development of new suburbs.  The challenge is for Ginninderra Catchment Group to work together with the local community to protect the reserves and actually enhance the biodiversity values of the area.

GCG sets out to inform the community, act as an agent of change, and help people understand that everything they do has some effect on their own and the shared environment.  With the right attitudes people can have a positive rather than a negative impact.  We seek to inspire people and make them willing partners in the important work ahead.
